Cambridge is most famous for its celebrated university, the second oldest university in the English-speaking world - Peter House College was founded in 1284. The rest of its 31 colleges are dotted around the centre of the city and beyond, rich in architectural elegance. In the centre of the city is an all-week market surrounded by shops which disappear down narrow lanes. There are magnificent museums, art galleries, theatres and restaurants, parks to stroll in and punts to ply on the River Cam. A city to astound you!

Curious About... Cambridge

  • An exploration of Cambridge's city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the city's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Cambridge in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on a short distance from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the city - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. Colleges and Museums - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms
Cambridge is an ancient city with an historic university, and this route provides a strong flavour of both. From the beginning you will pass museums and a celebrated inn. Passing ancient colleges, steeped in history, you arrive at the riverbank, busy with boats. From here it’s back to the centre, via yet more colleges, ancient churches, quirky shops, and a thriving market place - home to the Guildhall.

2. Colleges and River - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
Experience a quieter side of Cambridge as you traverse a delightful park, to discover former almshouses. From here it’s back towards the city centre - more interesting shops, and the magnificence of Sidney Sussex, Trinity and St John’s Colleges. Past a medieval Round Church next, before passing an array of restaurants, to complete your journey at Magdalene Bridge, overlooking Cambridge’s busy but beautiful river, the Cam.
