Explore York city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover York's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
York is home to over 30 museums and tourist attractions – more than any other comparable historical city in Britain. York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, taking 250 years to build, from 1220 till its consecration in 1472. The Shambles is believed to be the oldest shopping street in Europe, even getting a mention in the Domesday Book of 1086. Apparently still on the statue books is a law which makes it legal to shoot a Scotsman in York, but only with a bow and arrow and definitely not on Sundays.

Initially revel in the splendour of York’s magnificent Minster, before entering the city’s narrow streets and lanes with quirky shops and plentiful restaurants. Then it’s up onto the walls at a famous Gate, with fascinating views of the city, then historic buildings and tales of times past. Finally, it’s back to tourist York and the Shambles, a famously narrow, old-world street with overhanging, timber-framed buildings.
