Self-guided walks for the Curious...

Explore Llandudno town centre with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover Llandudno's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
Llandudno is a fabulous North Wales seaside resort which has a 2,295 feet long pier, and over 30 shipwrecks in Llandudno Bay. One of the oldest is the Phoenix, a warship wrecked in 1642 off the Great Orme. There are herds of goats all across the Great Orme, which are Kashmir goats. Alice Liddell, who inspired the character of ‘Alice’ in Lewis Carroll's ‘Alice in Wonderland’, would take family holidays to Llandudno. Winston Churchill stayed in Room 109 at the Grand Hotel when he visited Llandudno for the Conservative Party’s annual conference in 1948.

Curious About... Llandudno

  • An exploration of Llandudno's town centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the town's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Llandudno in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from close to where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the town - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. Station to Pier - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms
Visitors come to Llandudno for the sun, sea and sand – so this walk starts at the railway station, where many visitors arrive, and heads straight down to the sea shore. Take a stroll by the sea before heading back into the town’s main shopping street, named after one of its founding fathers. Explore some of its more interesting backstreets next, before returning to the lure of the sea, overlooking its majestic, iconic pier.

2. Pier View to Haulfre Gardens - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
From a spectacular view of Llandudno's dazzling pier, admire the dramatic Grand Hotel, before ascending part way up the Happy Valley and the scene of a national Eisteddfod! Past the foot of the Great Orme cable car, and a camera obscura, you then quickly descend to the start of the famous Great Orme tramway. From here you pass an historic pub, before arriving at Haulfre Gardens – some would say Llandudno’s secret gardens - perched on a hillside.
1 hourOK but diversion maybe needed

Each booklet has a page dedicated to the history of the town and 2 pages summarising each walk with suggestions on what to visit along the way. Walk 1 has 21 clues & walk 2 has 14 - both with detailed directions to follow. There are interesting stories about important people, places & events along the way; detailed instructions on how to find a clue if you're stuck; and a comprehensive map with the routes marked on.
