Self-guided walks for the Curious...

Explore Chester city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover Chester's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
Voted Europe’s fifth prettiest city by Americans, Chester is over 2000 years old and has the oldest race course, the largest Roman Amphitheatre, and the most complete set of Town Walls in the country. Under a Tudor law it is supposedly illegal for Welshmen to enter Chester after nightfall. Henry Gee was mayor of Chester in 1540 when he cancelled the Traditional Shrove Tuesday football game and replaced it with a horse race. His surname is where we get the informal name for race horses – Gee-Gees.

Curious About... Chester

  • An exploration of Chester's city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the city's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Chester in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the city - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. Castle to Cathedral - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms
From Chester’s ancient castle you walk along the City Walls, with impressive views to the west. Next meander along the beautiful riverside before heading up through delightful gardens. Into the city now, and Bridge Street with its famous Chester Rows. Round a church and up to Northgate past the imposing 19th century Town Hall. Up onto the walls again, before descending to circle the cathedral, and finish in its gardens.
1.5 hoursOK but diversion maybe needed

2. Cathedral to Gardens - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
Leaving the cathedral grounds you quickly pass under the City Walls at Eastgate, with its world famous clock. Down an historic street, before ascending the Walls once more, with fabulous views of river and gardens. From here you traverse an ancient Roman Amphitheatre, pass a semi-ruined church and chapels, before entering Grosvenor Park with its delightful gardens - somewhere to play and picnic!

"Excellent service. Excellent walks. I never knew how much there was too see and do in Chester, until I'd completed these walks. Tiring, but exhilarating!"
